FAQ

  • Where are you located?

I teach at NLFX Professional in Bemidji.

  • At what age can students begin lessons?

Some students are ready for music lessons by age four or five, but I find that most are ready to start by age six or seven, but students of all ages can start at any time!

  • Are there student recitals?

Yes, I offer two optional student recital opportunities per year. One in the spring, and one in December.

  • Do you accept adult students?

Yes, adult students are welcome! I have early-afternoon through evening times available.

  • Do you have time-slots for homeschool students?

Yes, there are times available during the early-afternoon through evening.

  • What do I need for an instrument?

Piano: An acoustic piano or an 88-key digital keyboard with a sustain-pedal and weighted keys.

Violin or Viola: Younger students will need a fractional sized instrument, and most students are ready for a full-size instrument around middle school age. It is best to rent an instrument until you are ready for a full-size one. Most violin shops have a rent-to-buy plan. I can help you find the right size instrument and can recommend rental options. I am also happy to give my opinion on any instrument you are considering to buy.

Guitar: Students can begin guitar as early as age six or seven. Younger students will need a fractional sized guitar, and most students are ready for a full sized guitar by the teenage years. Ukulele can also be an option for younger students who later want to play guitar. Students can start on either acoustic or electric guitar.

  • My child is in school orchestra/band. Why do they need lessons?

I encourage all my students to play in orchestra or band, but the emphasis in a school ensemble is more about learning how to play in a group, rather than learning how to play and advance as a instrumentalist. In private lessons students receive individual attention about proper playing techniques, learning music, correcting bad habits, and advancing as a musician. Students who take private lessons do better in orchestra or band, enjoy it much more, and are much more likely to continue playing!
